Their mission is to strip back the layers of modern music and transport you on a journey that began centuries ago when the immigrants first settled in the Appalachian Mountains of America. These guys aren’t just a band – they’re a show featuring colourful costumes, stories and song combined with tap dancing, bones, big harmonies and regular instrument changes.
Their latest album, “Down Foggy Mountain” has been receiving national recognition with 2 Golden Guitar nominations for Bluegrass Recording of the Year. Recorded in the Foggy Mountain Studio by iconic Australian producer Nash Chambers (responsible for #1 albums such as ‘Barricades & Brickwalls’ and ‘Rattlin’ Bones’ by sister Kasey Chambers), this album is a follow on of the Goat’s passion and understanding for the history of Stringband Music… Whilst they are in the same vein as their first 2 studio albums, working with Nash has been a step in a different direction for the band.
Down Foggy Mountain further stamps the musical twist on traditional songs The Hillbilly Goats are renowned for. Tracks on the new album have added a larger element of blues/roots alongside the Irish and Scottish influences. Early listening comparisons are reminiscent of US old time folk and alt-country legends, Old Crow Medicine Show. A heavy presence of hard fiddle and fast harmonica bring alive tracks such as the single ‘Rabbit in a Log’ and ‘Old Joe Clarke’ whilst the cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ have pushed the band’s boundaries in a direction that is fast pleasing punters and attracting new audiences.
A dedicated fan base has seen them voted into first place 3 years running for the Cairns Timeout Awards as “best NQ band” 2012-14, as well as finalists in the Tamworth People’s Choice Awards 2014. Another competition landed them on the main stage at the Official Opening Concert for the Tamworth Country Music Festival, which was an awesome way to kick-start 2015 – YEAR OF THE GOAT!
Their previous album reviews in the Weekend Australian and several music magazines not only rave about their recordings, but their stage presence has been labelled “more driving and energetic than the less traditional shows seen on main stages of Australian country festivals.” (Alex Turnbull, Capital News). The band members are never satisfied with their own instruments and continually swap over and change positions on stage – you won’t know where to look or who to watch!
So, if you’re still a Goat Virgin and haven’t seen the Hillbilly Goats yet, check them out and see what all the fuss is about. They sure know how to Raise A Ruckus and you are guaranteed to be entertained – OLD TIME STYLE!
